Doreen Bolnick began as an illustrator in pen and ink for archeologists and anthropologists at the Institute of African Studies and the British Institute in East Africa, both in Kenya, and also for the National Museum of Indonesia. She began keeping a prolific number of natural history sketchbooks at the end of the 1980's. In Zambia she wrote and illustrated A Guide to the Common Wild Flowers of Zambia and the Neighboring Regions (Macmillan Education Ltd., London, Basingstoke, 1995). She is completing the manuscript for a book she illustrated and co-authored with Salomao Bandeira and Filomena Barbosa, entitled Flores do Sul Mocambique / Wild Flowers of Southern Mozambique, (Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Maputo, 2005).
