Susan J. Aldworth

Susan J. Aldworth is a freelance botanical artist and botanical art instructor specializing in botanical watercolor painting. Her work is informed by her training in both the arts and the plant sciences: In her paintings of live plant subjects, Sue hopes to entice the viewer into a deeper recognition of each plant's aesthetic potential, while simultaneously inviting a closer observation of each plant's unique structural and scientific detail. "Ever since early childhood, I have had an empathy for plants. Exploring my grandmother's gerbera nursery and playing in my parents' lush, subtropical South African garden awakened in me an enduring affinity for the sights, scents, and sounds of the natural world. Embracing and sharing the mystery and wonder of that world through my art has become my passion."

Sue's training includes an Interdisciplinary Masters Degree in Art, Botany, and English (Iowa State University), a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in Fine Art/Printmaking and English (South Africa), a Certificate in Botanical Illustration (San Diego), and a National Diploma in Horticulture (South Africa). For her Master's Degree, Sue wrote and illustrated a book and developed an accompanying website on 100 Trees and Shrubs of the Campus of Iowa State University. Commissioned artworks include botanical T-shirt designs for the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC, and artworks for private collections. Sue is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) and Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI), and is on the Botanical Illustration Certificate Program Advisory Council at the NC Botanical Garden.
