Weird, Wild, and Wonderful - The Second New York Botanical Garden Triennial

The New York Botanical Garden, 200th Street and Kazimiroff Blvd., Bronx, NY

The 2014 theme is “Weird, Wild, and Wonderful,” inviting you to seek out visually unusual plants and create works of art celebrating the bizarre and yet beautiful flora of the world. Botanical oddities and curiosities are found in your yard, in natural circumstances or in a botanical garden. Some examples are the Arum family – dragon arum, titan arum, those with a mace-like spadix; or Solanum pyracanthos, a tomato relative with orange, aggressive thorns; or the Rafflesia which is the largest flower in the world.

There are plants that mimic insects in the orchid family, kinetic plants that use motion to trap pollinators, carnivorous plants and graceful “walking” ferns. You could focus on something as large as a whole clonal colony of aspen or as small as the carnivorous round-leaved sundew. Find an albino form of a flower or the “witches broom” of branches caused by a virus or insect. The choices are as wide as your curiosity and should provide inspiration for great botanical art, encouraging exciting portrayals of new subject matter, and capturing the imaginations of artists and viewers alike.

Eligibility: ASBA members in good standing, world-wide

Jurors: To be announced

Subject: “Weird, wild, and wonderful" botanical subjects. Note: For this exhibition, "wild" does not mean the plant must be a wildflower - rather that it has an unusual "wow, that's wild!" appearance.

Media Accepted: Two dimensional, original artworks featuring botanical specimens.  Work may have appeared in regional or invitational exhibitions, but may not have been shown in another international ASBA juried exhibition. No photographs or digital work accepted.

Submissions: Up to three artworks may be entered by each artist. Entry Fee $35 Digital files only: 300 dpi, image 8” high, .tif or .jpg files, submitted on CD/DVD labeled with marker only with artist’s name and name of artwork. Individual files on disk must be labeled with artist’s name and image title. Disks will not be returned.

Submission deadline: September 2013 – you have two years to create something special for the show. Watch for further information in upcoming issues of the Journal.

Awards: The prestigious New York Botanical Garden Medals will be awarded.

ASBA Exhibition Policy

All images should be of work executed by hand in traditional botanical media.  The subject plant must be the prominent feature of the work.  Though the Member Gallery is not juried,  please note that all submissions will be vetted for appropriateness to the Mission and Definition of the ASBA:

The American Society of Botanical Artists, Inc. (ASBA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting public awareness of botanical art and to encouraging the development of this continuing artistic tradition. The botanical art tradition combines science and art. Botanical artists seek to understand the structure of plants and to communicate this knowledge to their audience in an aesthetically pleasing manner. While botanical art encompasses a range of styles, the focus of the ASBA is on work that conforms to the above definition, whether it takes the form of scientific illustration or realistic drawing and painting of botanical subjects.
